Introduction

Introduction

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges we face today, largely driven by human activities that release record levels of greenhouse gases. A big part of this comes from the energy we use in our homes. In the UK alone, heating homes makes up around 13-14% of the country’s total carbon emissions, contributing to a larger 23% from heating overall. By making small changes, like adopting smart meters and investing is more environmentally friendly solutions, we can take meaningful steps towards a smarter, greener future, helping to reduce emissions and protect the planet.

My focus was on designing for families with young kids who lead busy lives, balancing multiple responsibilities and commitments. This user group often struggles to manage their energy consumption despite owning multiple smart devices around the house, due to a lack of time, technical expertise or motivation.
